Pemba Town Council, in collaboration with the State Police and officers from the Ministry of Health, conducted a night legal enforcement joint operation on 24th December 2024. The operation aimed to assess compliance with the Liquor Licensing Act, 2011, and the Public Health Act, Cap 295 of the Laws of Zambia.
The exercise targeted various bars and liquor stores across the district. Out of the 17 bars and liquor stores inspected, 8 had obtained the required extension of hours permit from the Local Authority, while 7 premises were found closed during the operation. Two premises were found operating without the necessary extension of hours permit, and appropriate legal action was taken against the proprietors in line with the provisions of the law.
During the operation, a total of 30 litres of illicit beer, locally known as kachasu, was seized. Encouragingly, no incidents of underage admissions into bars or liquor stores were recorded.
We commend the cooperation of the majority of business owners who have shown compliance with legal requirements. However, the Council urges all liquor store and bar operators to strictly adhere to the Liquor Licensing Act and ensure their operations align with the law.
We also take this opportunity to remind the general public of the dangers associated with the production and consumption of illicit alcohol. Such practices not only violate the law but also pose serious health risks.
Pemba Town Council will continue to work closely with relevant stakeholders to enforce compliance and safeguard the well-being of our community.
